Leverkusen’s quest for Champions League football received a big blow last week when they got brushed aside by Bayern, but a meeting against a struggling Schalke side offers a good opportunity to get back on track.

Schalke started the season well under first-year boss David Wagner, but the wheels started to come off at the start of 2020, and they head into this weekend’s action sitting on a 12-game winless run. They had lost all four games since the restart before settling for a 1-1 draw against a relegation-threatened Union Berlin last Sunday.

Leverkusen flew out of the gate when action restarted in Germany, but they have now lost two of their last three league games. The situation worsened ahead of last week’s big game against Bayern when wonderkid Kai Havertz was ruled out with a muscle problem. He also missed Tuesday’s DFB-Pokal semi-final against Saarbrücken, which Leverkusen won 3-0.

Meetings between these two always seem to serve up a nice amount of goals, with the last goalless draw in the matchup coming in October 2000. Leverkusen won the reverse fixture 2-1 thanks to a Lucas Alario brace. It’s only their second win in the last six head to head games.
